March is the time to prepare for the cooler months by digging out your summer flowers and planting spring bulbs and winter-flowering annuals like pansies, violas and sweetpeas.

  • Sow seeds like Namaqualand Daisies, Virginian Stocks, Sweet Peas and Iceland poppies.
  • Lift summer bulbs after the leaves have withered and store in a cool dry place.
  • Buy spring flowering bulbs like anemone, babiana, Dutch iris, freesia, ixia, grape hyacinths, ranunuculus, scilia, sparaxis, tritonia and tulbachia.
  • Remember to only start planting towards the end of March once the soil has cooled down sufficiently.
  • Remove summer annuals that are looking tired and old and start replacing with winter-flowering annuals like pansies, violas, sweetpeas, primulas, cinerarias and Iceland poppies.
  • Keep your camellias well watered especially at this time of the year when the buds are starting to form.
  • Spread mulch around plants like camellias and azaleas because we can still experience hot weather in March.
  • Continue to water lawns thoroughly once a week if insufficient rain has fallen, and water restrictions permit.
  • Water your plants in containers at least once a week especially if soaring temperatures persist.
  • Citrus trees can be fed with 2kg of Rose food and 75g of Magnesium sulphate (Epson Salts).
