Are you tired of looking at your plain-looking walls? Perhaps you feel that your home needs a makeover? One of the easiest ways to update your home’s interior is with wall décor to create an eye-catching focus wall.
Fine art will cost you a fortune and another coat of paint or new colour won’t make much of a difference. Here are a few tips to help you decorate your wall without spending too much money.
“A feature wall is a decorated section of a wall that grabs your attention and draws the eye towards it. This effect can be achieved through the use of bold colours and interesting borders and patterns,” says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at TILE AFRICA.
Start by considering which section of the wall you would like to highlight. Once that is done, it is up to you to decide how you would like to decorate the wall and with which materials. “Create wide or narrow, horizontal or vertical borders with colourful mosaics, beautiful listelli or tiles cut into strips,” she adds.
You can also use colourful glass mosaics as decorative splashbacks in your kitchen or bathroom. Stainless steel mosaic splashbacks are great for the kitchen as they are durable and add a funky edge. Tiles with metallic finishes are increasing in popularity. The tonality of the metal colours is becoming warmer. “Bronze and gold tones are being used as an alternative to stainless steel,” says van Niekerk.
Another option is an accent wall, this is one wall within a single room that stands out as it is different and interesting, be it due to colour or other decorative aspects. Accent walls can be created with the use of ceramic or porcelain tiles or mosaics as a solid block of colour. “Lay tiles in an interesting pattern such as a 45-degree angle or cut them into different sizes to create interest,” advises van Niekerk.
Your accent wall can also be created with the use of colourful glass mosaics or natural stone cladding. Glass mosaics add vibrant colour while sandstone cladding brings texture to a wall. “Our stores offer mosaic tiles in trendy bright hues and tiles in the latest formats and finishes. Mosaics are available in electric blues and aqua or fresh citrus and melon shades,” she says.
