So you’re fit. You run, you swim and you play sport. But how fit are you? How the hell do compare your running fitness to other disciplines?

There is, of course, the triathlon. The Ironman event was originally conceived when a group of athletes argued about who was fitter – the runner, cyclist or swimmer – and decided to combine the three in a super triathlon.

But while that solved the problem over those three disciplines, how would a triathlete compare to other athletes?

The CrossFit Games – currently getting plenty of airtime on ESPN at my mate’s house – has posed that question for a time now.  CrossFit is all about complete fitness, ranging from heavy lifting, to endurance, to flexibility and the Games hold events that cover all of this.

Competitors find themselves doing everything from flipping tyres and climbing ropes, to running and swimming. The points for each event are added up and the eventual winner is generally the athlete proficient at them all.

The Fittest in Cape Town (FICT) competition is the brainchild of Cape Town’s CrossFit gym owner, Jobst Olschewski, and like the CrossFit Games, it will also feature a wide variety of events. It is also open to anybody who wants to take part, not just for those in the CrossFit community.

And never fear, while they do include lifts, the events will not be too technical, to further ensure that those with a background in CrossFit training will not be at an advantage going into the event.

While most other competitions predominantly test capabilities in endurance and stamina, Jobst believes FICT goes far beyond that, testing all other physical skills – namely strength, flexibility, speed, power, coordination, accuracy, agility and balance – too.

Doing well or even winning the competition by mastering just one or two of these skills will be next to impossible, rather winning requires balance and proficiency in all of them.

The competition is intended as an annual one, providing an opportunity to actually measure physical capacity and compete in functional fitness. As such, it will not only reveal who is fittest, but give each competitor an indication of how fit they are.

So, are you game?

Entries are still open, but are limited, so if you want to prove you have what it takes to be crowned the Fittest in Cape Town, best you get over to the FICT website and enter. http://www.fittestincapetown.com/

I will be taking part – and I am trying to strong arm some colleagues to join me in a team – but I have no illusions of competing for the ultimate prize, rather I see it as a continued progression in my own personal fitness. Maybe next year I will give the top dogs a run for their money…
