As summer approaches we tend to spend much more time outside, but the sun, sea and chlorine have an unfortunate effect on our tresses.
As with most things, prevention is better than cure! By following a nutritious diet, using protective products and trying out some new hair trends, it’s easy to keep your hair looking healthy this summer.
1) Nutritious diet
When it comes to healthy hair, it’s not just what you put onto your hair that counts but what goes into your body. Eating a well-balanced diet full of protein and iron will help promote growth and shine. Try adding the following super foods into your diet for an extra boost.
Green, leafy vegetables: Broccoli, spinach and green beans are a great source of vitamin A and C. They will help produce sebum, which is secreted by the hair follicle and acts as a natural conditioner.
Fish: Salmon is one of the best fishes to eat. It is jam packed with omega-3 fatty acids, iron and vitamins. Omega-3 helps promote scalp health, therefore creating healthy shiny hair.
Nuts: Add a handful of nuts to your daily intake. Walnuts, Brazil nuts and cashews all have important minerals and vitamins which help to promote healthy hair.
Poultry: Chicken and turkey are one of the best sources of protein. Protein plays a huge role in building strong hair, preventing brittleness and hair loss.
2) Hair products
Not all hair-care brands have an SPF included. Next time you’re shopping for your hair-care products, look out for ones which say they have an SPF. Some hair dyes also have a slight SPF in them.
If you are going to be spending the day by the pool or on the beach, a good idea is to comb or brush a drop of sunscreen through your hair and then tie your hair up so that the sun can’t reach your scalp.
After a day spent in the sun, wash your hair with a good shampoo and conditioner to lock back the moisture lost. Try L'Oreal's Elvive Full Restore 5 replenishing range. For some extra nourishment try a few drops of L’Oreal Mythic oil R279.95, for a deep treatment, or MoroccanOil Treatment Oil, R315.
3) Hair Trends
A good way to protect your hair from the sun is by adding a head accessory. Wide-brimmed straw hats are a must-have item for this season. Wrap a beautiful scarf around your head or tie it as a bandana. If you can carry off a peak hat, wear a nice bright one – or if you are really daring, try the new fashion trend: turbans!
