Question:

My son is getting married in three weeks time and I still don't have any idea what I'm going to wear! Please give me some idea of where to look and what to look for. I need something I can wear in the afternoon (to Church), as well as in the evening. I was thinking of having something made, but what? Where can I find ideas?

Answer:

Before choosing your outfit, I would suggest that you meet with the mother of the bride and discuss what colour and style she is planning to wear to the wedding, so that you don't clash in any way.

Bear in mind that it is inappropriate for either of you to wear a white or cream outfit.

When making your choice, you should also take into consideration the colours the bridesmaids will be wearing. As your son's wedding is a very special occasion, it is well worth investing in a specially made garment, instead of buying one off the peg.

I have heard stories of mothers faced with the embarrassing situation of arriving at the wedding wearing the same outfit as a wedding guest! Try to choose an outfit that you will be able to wear again, or one you can easily mix and match with other garments in your wardrobe.

For an afternoon or evening wedding, a smart suit with a camisole, or a dress and jacket, are appropriate.

If it is a formal evening wedding, a long skirt and top (or jacket), or a long dress, are all acceptable.

Although hats are no longer necessary, this is entirely a matter of choice.

On the Celebration House website, www.celebrationhouse.co.za you will find the contact details of those who will be able to make you a suitable outfit for the wedding.

At Celebration House we also have a library of imported wedding magazines, which you are most welcome to page through for ideas.
