Organic certification
"); document.write("Please noet: Organics SA is not a certifying body and was originally formed as an industry body for organic farmers in South Africa. Certification is by independant certifiers who generally use the European organic certification principles. These include in South Africa Ecocert, BCS, BDOCA and others - look out for their logo's on all truly certified organic produce and ask to see a copy of the certificate if you are buying from an organic farmer at a market.

organic food

Organic vs Conventional Food
"); document.write("Bruce, your comments reflect the standard but woefully misinformed opinion of many who haven't studied the subject in depth. Organic food products are, in general, so much higher in essential nutrients and trace elements that they are not only vastly better for you, but you actually need to eat less than conventionally-produced foods. Also, when properly grown (using permaculture principles, for example), output is generally much higher per hectare than even the most intensely-farmed conventional agricultural methods - though it takes several years to turn around former chemically-reliant land into healthy soil that can produce nutrient-rich, healthy food. Among the negatives for organic products is that they tend, at this point, to be slightly more expensive, though much higher priced oil-derivative fertilisers, pesticides and other chemical interventions are narrowing that gap. Also, the fact that mass-harvesting is not always considered environmentally friendly enough for organic certifying organisations (for example, getting crushed chameleons in your grapes through automated harvesting, rather than hand-harvest grapes which avoids this problem) means many organic farms are labour-intensive, which adds to the price of the final product. But if you can afford a few rand more, and you know the food you are consuming is both better for you and ethically produced, isn't that worth it? Also, methods are improving, demand for organic products is increasing and the costs of these products are coming down. Bruce, it's time to get with the programme, bud. The chemical-driven 'green revolution' of the '60s and '70s is over and is turning into an environmental nightmare with disasterous consequences. And no-one can say yet what the mass experiment in genetically modified foods is going to do to us - except that initial indications are that, at the least, food allergies are become ever-more prevalent and at younger and younger ages in those exposed to these foods. Dead soil and toxic chemicals can't keep us alive or feed the planet. Fact: during World War II, and for some years thereafter, the number of people suffering what would loosely be called '20th century epidemic degenerative diseases', from tooth decay through arthritis and cancer, fell to historically low levels in the UK. Why? Because people were forced by the Nazi blockade of the seas to grow their own (organic) vegetables and fruits, or to trade what they had grown for someone else's similarly-produced veggies. But when American-style fast foods starting coming into style from the '60s onwards, UK health profiles began to match that of their much sicker American counterparts - with lots more chronic disease. Everyone should do themselves a favour and get educated - for themselves and their kids. There are a couple of good local magazines now on the shelves which will teach you all you need to know about going organic the easy way - and avoiding the pitfalls and problems, without sacrificing your modern lifestyle.. Organics
"); document.write("Bruce your comment is 100 percent correct. The only way that \"Organic\" food growers can viably supply enough food to the health freaks is to use pesticides and fertilizers. Organic food looks delicious and healthy because of pesticides. If organic growers did not use pesticides then their veggies will be half eaten by bugs etc. This will make their products look yucky and nobody will buy them. They use \"Organic Pesticides\" which are normal pesticides but in different packaging. . Russel"); document.write("
