I don’t believe in cheesy commercialised days like Valentine’s Day – but I do believe in a day celebrating mothers and all they do for us.

A mother isn’t appreciated nearly as much as she should be – cooking, cleaning, ironing, washing mending, loving, fixing, kissing-it-better – the list is endless, doing all she can for her family without the slightest grumble and always with a smile.

So for the next six days we will give you tips and ideas on how to spoil your mom and make her feel special and valued everyday this week, and not only on this Sunday's Mother's Day.

After all, mothers should be celebrated every day and not just once a year.

Day 1

One thing we easily take for granted is the home-cooked meal our moms have ready for us when we come home from school or work.

Nothing compares to my mother’s delicious butternut soup on a cold winter's day or her yummy scones with tea on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

In our household we often take turns cooking supper or making breakfast so that my mom can have an off-day. On Mother’s Day in particular she is banned from the kitchen and so we have to whip up breakfast, lunch and supper.

Below we have some delectable and easy recipes that can you use when surprising your mom with breakfast in bed or with a lovely dinner all laid out on the table.

The trick is to make a quick meal without losing out on flavour.

Also remember to serve each meal on a tray with a pretty placemat and with the best crockery and cutlery you have at home. Adding one fresh flower also gives that extra special touch.

Breakfast

Banana-coconut pancakes

Pancakes with orange butter

Nutella Crepes

Whatever you decide to make for your mom for breakfast, it ultimately must be served in bed.

We like to surprise my mom with breakfast as she wakes up to the smells wafting from the kitchen – one way to do this is make the pancake batter the night before and leave it in the fridge so you don’t make a huge racket the next day while preparing the batter.

Another trick is to leave whatever you will need the next morning all together in one place to keep the sound down to a bare minimum.

The above-mentioned pancakes are fabulous with a mug of freshly-brewed coffee and some fresh fruit like strawberries, bananas or whatever fruit of your choice.

Lunch

Lunch should be quick and easy – use leftovers to make these tasty tortilla wraps.

Grilled chicken and avocado wrap

Supper

Since Winter is fast approaching, I think it’s fitting to have a hearty and healthy soup recipe.

Classic Butternut soup

Spicy Sweet potato and carrot soup

Gordon Ramsay’s Broccoli soup

Serve with a crusty loaf of bread. Delish.
