According to a recent survey, 10 is the perfect number of past lovers.

In a survey by SeekingArrangement.com, 1000 members of both sexes were asked what they considered an acceptable number of past lovers.

Half of women in the survey said that 10 was a good round number, while 46 percent of men agreed.

The group placed those with less than 10 lovers in the inexperienced bracket, and revealed that they considered those with more than 10 as promiscuous.

Not everyone was okay with the idea of their current lover having 10 past loves. In fact, 36 percent of women and 42 percent of men said they’d prefer a partner with fewer notches on their bedpost. While for some — 11 percent of women and 10 percent of men — the magic number of previous lovers for a potential partner was between 10 and 30 lovers.

Three percent of those surveyed said they wanted a partner who had slept with more than 30 people.

When it comes down to reality, however, 65 percent of women and 70 percent of men said they'd rather not know how many lovers their partner has had in the past.

Their findings suggested that women are more liberal about promiscuity and men are less tolerant, giving some insight into what is acceptable and what is not in the dating world.

"The dating game is changing so quickly. I think we are all becoming a lot more tolerant and sexually adventurous. If we had conducted this poll 10 years ago, men would have expected a potential partner to have slept with far few people," SeekingArrangement founder Brandon Wade was quoted as saying.
