Sex isn't for everyone. Nuns. Now there's a good example of a group of individuals who just aren't that into sex. Hmm... and priests... ah, no, wait. Scratch that.

Yip, I think we can pretty much take it as a given that most people enjoy sex. Proof: there are over six billion people on the planet. Further proof: over 100 000 South Africans visit Sexpo every year.

However, most people — and I include myself in this — get kind of nervous and giggly at the thought of mascots called Penisaurus and Titisaurus, a guy who paints with his you-know-what, and a conference centre full of sex toys.

Of course, there are also those who work themselves into a frenzy, write letters of complaint, and stage protests.

We chatted to Sexpo Managing Director Silas Howarth about the upcoming exhibition at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 1 to 4 October.

What attracts people to Sexpo?

"Sexpo is a health, sexuality and lifestyle festival and is four days of sexy shopping and sizzling entertainment. South Africans have come such a long way in the last 15 years and are mostly looking for a fun day or night out.

"Sexpo has something for everyone, with non-stop entertainment, fun and informative workshops, mount peni and so much more, as well as almost 200 exhibitor stalls showcasing everything from sexy wines to lingerie and erotic toys and DVDs."

He's not kidding. Over and above all the exhibitor stores, Sexpo also has a jam-packed programme of workshops (everything from lap dance lessons to a workshop not-so-cryptically called The Big O), famous Adult Film stars, and two stages with live entertainment (a good portion of it inviting audience participation). It even has a Love Chapel — Vegas-style — where for a R1500 and in a mere 15 minutes you and your loved one can get hitched.

What are the best attractions?

"Kim Kitty and the Kittens is our newest local act on stage and the girls are amazing! Kim does the most fantastic aerial acts which keep the crowds gasping for more. The Pulse Boys wow the ladies and Amateur Strip is the funniest show you will ever see in your life, watching ordinary Sexpo visitors strutting their stuff on the stage in front of everyone!

"Gigi from the Lollipop Lounge holds a fantastic workshop for the ladies on how to give the ultimate lap dance. Everyone gets involved, it's hilarious, fun and you'll learn a few handy tips as well!"

Other attractions include: Pricasso (yip, the artist); naughty hypnotist Alain D Woolf who gets his subjects to perform as strippers and porn stars; burlesque dancing; pole dancing (shows and lessons); and strip poker.

So, what about those disgruntled killjoys?

"There is always a small disgruntled group of extremists who are opposed to any kind of progressive entertainment or harmless adult fun. We have never received more than twenty complaints per show, when tens of thousands flock through the doors, so they are definitely in the minority.

"I am extending an invitation to any ultra-conservative religious group or killjoy to come to the show and see what Sexpo is really about. I will personally take them on a guided tour and show them how much fun and how healthy it can be to embrace your sexuality."
