We're just like celebrities — apart from the money thing and the freedom to move without having 30 photographers swarming about. So what better place to find inspiration for Valentines than those very people who help us to be all that we can be…

Don't be cheap

OK, so perhaps you can't afford to get your beloved the platinum cell phone Jay-Z bought Beyonce, that carousel horse David Arquette got from Courteney Cox or a night in a $40 000 hotel suite (stand up, George Clooney).

But that's no excuse to skimp, like Nick Lachey who, a few years ago, spent the day watching 'Lost' and 'Desperate Housewives' with Jessica Simpson, while Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro caught up on their favourite reality shows. Both couples have since divorced — although, to be fair, that's probably got more to do with their own disastrous reality TV outings.

Avoid later embarrassment

Marilyn Manson, clearly trying to get past the shame of ex-wife Dita von Teese revealing that he once baked her cupcakes on Valentine's, went a bit more appropriate with his subsequent girlfriend. The goth rocker and then-19-year-old Evan Rachel Wood got matching tattoos: he a black heart on his wrist, she a black heart around a "lightning bolt for David Bowie". The tattoos remain but their relationship's now dead, Wood perhaps finally realising she was with the Antichrist Superstar and not the Starman.

Get hitched

Liam Gallagher is better known for getting his front teeth punched out than his romantic gestures. And yet the professional hooligan, obsessive John Lennon fan and part-time Oasis singer married his long-term girlfriend Nicole Appleton on 14 February last year in a quiet ceremony.

"It was exactly what Liam and Nicole wanted — a romantic, intimate ceremony," a friend claimed of the big day, details of which the couple kept secret until the last minute.

A year earlier, the frizzy-haired former 'Felicity' Keri Russell tied the knot with Shane Deary, her longtime boyfriend. Predictably it was as dull as her series...

Take off your clothes

Pamela Anderson isn't what you'd call shy. So why would the day of Cupid be any different for the celebrity sex-tape pioneer?

Last year she and her twofold talent made their strip club debut at Le Crazy Horse, a famous cabaret venue situated in the city of love. Ooh la la.

And Pammie's Playboy Playmate pal Jenny McCarthy had an equally appropriate Valentine's Day. Her beau, Jim Carrey told Oprah last year: "I did a painting for Jenny and it took me 50 hours." To the talkshow host's question of what he paints, he replied: "Mostly nudes. Just certain sections of the anatomy — and I give them names."
