Every guy needs a hairdresser. When I was a youngster I went to the same barber for over six years. He knew what I (or more truthfully, my parents I guess) wanted and there was a relationship that ensured there were no awkward attempts at conversation.

I have bounced between hairdressers since then, however, failing to find one particular hairdresser to call home. But after a cut at Blokes Hair in Cape Town I may finally have found the right spot.

Located at the Foundry in Green Point, Blokes Hair is a great mix of old school barber – with its leather wingback arm chairs and vintage photographs in the waiting area – and modern amenities like kicking back with a whisky (or beer, brandy, wine or a coffee if you prefer) as you listen to some jazz…

Blokes is a one-man show run by Brian Oosthuizen and along with the comfort of the waiting area (the franchise hairdressers have a long way to go here) it is the individualistic approach that really sets it apart from the rest.

Brian gives a full consultation before the cut (being a simple guy and knowing what I wanted I didn't really need one) ensuring you get the perfect cut and when you return, he knows your specific needs and you can be sure your hair will look the same as when you left the time before.

The whole process is also quick. No waiting for the cut, a wash, condition and head massage. I was in and out in under 30 minutes, which is a pleasure.

It’s very much the personal touch that will have you returning to Blokes Hair.
