Smell is our most powerful sense and it has been shown to be the one that is linked the most closely to memory. It's no wonder then that fragrance houses spend millions coming up with perfumes that are not only a pleasure to smell, but that also complement (and influence) your mood.
To help you on your quest for the perfect summer fragrance, here's our hot list of smells for summer:
For her
Elizabeth Arden has just re-launched its biggest-selling perfume, 5th Avenue. Previously aimed at the mature forty-something woman, they’ve now broadened their appeal to reach the twenty-something market in the form of 5th Avenue After Five. With subtle hints of oriental spices and overtones of Jasmine and Musk, it’s the perfect partner for that little black dress and an evening out on the town. The 30ml Eau de Parfum spray now retails for R235.
Guess by Parlux For Women (R595 for 75ml) has just been unpacked in outlets throughout the country. The pink, slim bottle snugly encases a scent laiden with floral and fruity overtones, which are slightly simmered down with tangerine, green apple, amber and musk.
Ralph by fashion guru Ralph Lauren is for the independent woman who thrives on freedom. It’s been described as a fresh, colourful fragrance with hints of fruity and floral scents. It retails for R325 for the 30ml bottle.
For him
Lacoste has launched a massive marketing campaign to introduce its customers to its newest addition to its menswear line, Lacoste Essential – just ask for the green bottle. The cologne is said to be a unique combination of fresh and spicy notes on an elegant woody base. With this scent, the company has used the innovation of the P&G patented "time release technology" for a longer-lasting effect, which should leave you smelling better for longer. The edt spray in 75ml goes for R425.
Azzoro has come up with a scent that it says is the hi-tech fragrance for the powerful man. The see-through bottle is shaped like a prow of a boat or the wing of a plane, definitely a keep-sake once the perfume is long finished. The Fragrance is a spicy and woody scent with distinguishable amber notes. The 50ml edt natural spray retails for R390.
Judging by the success of Hugo Boss’ previous contributions in the men's fragrance range, its latest offering Hugo Boss Energise should have the same effect. Like Lacoste Essential, it also has woody overtones, but with a citrus base. The edt natural spray can be yours for R425 (50ml).
For both of you
Couture junkie Jean Paul Gaultier has introduced a new unisex perfume to his signature fragrance line. Called Gaultier 2, it’s a blend of amber, musk with subtle hints of vanilla. Gaultier 2 retails for R495 for the 40ml bottle.
Thierry Mugler has also ventured into the unisex market by concocting up Cologne by Thierry Mugler (R390 for 75ml). He describes it as "combining a familiar clean scent and citrus notes, with a secret note, intriguing and blending with the skin".
The perfumes mentioned above are all new fragrances that have just hit stores, but our personal favourites here at iafrica.com are:
