Background: Steenberg Vineyards, the oldest farm in the Constantia Valley, has added a rose to their HMS range of wines. The HMS range comprise’s of fruit from selected vineyards which may not all be from the Constantia region. Winemaker, JD Pretorius, source’s grapes which showcase the character of the style of wine related to the vineyards, soil and climate. The range comprises the Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc, Sphynx Chardonnay, Echo Red Blend and now the Ruby Rose.
The naming of the wines finds its origin in the fascinating history of the Battle of Muizenberg and refers to four of the squadron of ten Royal Navy ships that took part in the 1st British Occupation of the Cape. HMS Ruby on Sunday the 7th August 1795 fired her guns in the legendary battle between the British forces and the VOC (De Vereenigde Ost-Indische Compagne). This also ties in with the history of Steenberg in that much of the action took place around this coastal area and inland, encompassing what is today known as Sandvlei, Retreat, Wynberg and Muizenberg. Skirmishes also took place where now the Steenberg vineyards grow.
The Ruby Rose 2017 is a blend of Syrah (from Constantia and Robertson vineyards) and Cinsault (from old bush vines in Stellenbosch and Swartland) which were fermented separately in stainless steel tanks with a small amount in oak.
Result: The wine shows the palest partridge-eye hue with appealing aromas with generous savoury vinosity, lees enrichment with a rounded dryness on the finish.

Drink with what: poached Salmon served with a tomato based hollandaise sauce.
