Wine: Van Wyk Family Wines Olivia Grace 2016
Wine of Origin: Western Cape
Winemaker: Justin van Wyk
Background: Constantia Glen’s winemaker, Justin van Wyk, has launched his own brand, Van Wyk Family Wines, with a range of four wines which he vinifies and bottles at Constantia Glen. The two whites, a blend and a Chenin Blanc and two reds, a blend and a Syrah illustrate some of the heritage grape varieties grown in the Cape and different to the Bordeaux styles that Constantia Glen is known for. Justin also looked for older vineyards in the Swartland and Stellenbosch region, some of which only offering very low yields.
I had the opportunity this week to taste through the wines with Justin and found them an interesting and refreshing collection of wines. The white blend, the Olivia Grace (named after his daughter) was particularly good and especially that it included 26% Riesling from an old bush vine vineyard in the Helderberg region with Chenin Blanc 43% (Slanghoek), Chardonnay 26% (Montague) and Viognier 5% (Constantia) making up the rest. Prior to blending and the final bottling the wines spent 6 months in a combination of old 225litre barrels and one concrete egg.
Result: This flavourful invigorating dry wine, is well balanced with concentrated intense, peachy fruit flavours on the palate.
