Wine: Cowlin Sauvignon Blanc 2016
Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch
Winemaker: Hardy Laubscher
Background: Dr John Cowlin and his daughter Lisa share a passion for wine and it shows with their range of wines under the rekindled Cowlin brand. Johns’ venture into the wine industry actually goes back many years when he and his family owned Cowlin Winery outside Paarl. After many successful years making premium wines they decided to sell the farm and take a break but the bug stayed and now along with his daughter the brand is happily back on the market.
They currently offer a range of three wines and the one that I have been enjoying recently is their 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from selected vineyards in the Stellenbosch region and is an un wooded version. After fermentation the wine was allowed to rest on the lees for a few months which has given the wine its rich complex flavours making it an ideal partner with food.
Result: Subtle herbaceous aromas with nuances of tropical fruit follow on to intense fruit structure on the palate with a lingering dry lemon tail.
When to drink: now till 2020
Drink with what: Try it with grilled yellow tail with lemon butter served with creamed spinach….but also on its own its highly quaffable!!
Expect to pay: R83.00
