Burger King announced a special summer menu Wednesday that includes a 510-calorie bacon sundae perfected in one of the most obesity-stricken states in America.

"This limited-time soft serve dessert took Nashville, Tennessee by storm earlier this year and is now available nationwide to satisfy every sweet tooth," the fast-food chain said in a press release.

"The sweet and savoury dessert features the rich and creamy vanilla BK soft serve (ice cream), drizzled with chocolate fudge, caramel and topped with bacon crumbles, complete with a thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon garnish."

Its calorie count is within sight of Burger King's signature Whopper hamburger, which weighs in at 670 calories.

Tennessee has the fourth-highest obesity rate in the United States at 31.9 percent, according to a report last year by the Trust for America's Health think tank.

Last month an HBO television documentary cast a spotlight on local efforts in Nashville, the state capital and heart of the US country music industry, to reverse the trend.

The bacon sundae — which has eight grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar — is part of a one-off, barbecue-themed selection from Burger King that also includes such Southern favourites as pulled pork sandwiches, frozen lemonade and sweet potato fries.
