There comes a time in every woman’s life, when you become tired of the old items in your closet, and you feel you desperately need to go on a shopping spree. But there's one problem: you're low on cash and your credit limit is way overdue... it's time for a little recycling.

But before you go "ugh", and run off to the local YDE, best you consider that recycling your wardrobe is a chance to embark on a whole new look, and make a fashion statement by creating unique and stylish items that you won't find in shops.

Jeans

Like James Bond, a good pair of jeans never dies.

Adding pieces of material such as leather, lace, or even chiffon is one way of spicing up an old pair of jeans.

This season the world of fashion was drenched in pink... hot pink, and if it got any hotter you would have burned in pink flames.

Add pink lace to your seams, or waistline to create a cute, feminine look.

Cutting your jeans in a few places or removing pockets can also work, especially if you're into the rough, rock-chick look.

Cutting off your jeans and making a skirt if you're skilful with a needle, or know someone who is.

If time has taken its toll on your jeans, and your bottom seams are worn out, learn from the cool, hip and trendy crowd and wear them with a pair of stylish designer sneakers, to create a funky look.

Or turn them and wear a pair of sexy, strappy, sandals teamed with a fabulous top for a night out on the town.

Shirts

There are many ways to give an old shirt new life:

Adding new, different buttons is one way of giving it a trendy look.

Patches or badges sewn onto a plain shirt, for a fun, informal look, are another inexpensive way to give it new life.

Finally, accessorising is the other fun way of creating new outfits. Adding a brooch, flower or tie to a shirt gives it a stunning makeover.

Plain skirts

Belts, belts and more belts; adding a gorgeous belt is the easiest way to spice up an old skirt.

A broad, shiny, studded, beaded or suede belt is sure to make a stylish difference.

Ribbons, flowers, sequins or even beads can be added to revitalise an old dull-looking skirt.

Stitching fake fur to the hem is great for a winter look.

To add some glitz and glamour, adding a bit of shiny studs, or beads will do the trick.

Wearing a cocktail dress over jeans has become a popular trend among the stars; it creates a formal, yet casual, look.

Plain tops

Adding a shiny, diamante brooch is an excellent way of reviving a dull top. For a classy, formal look, wrapping a chiffon shawl over a top is an interesting way to create a stylish, yet uniquely different, top.

Recycling your wardrobe can become a really exciting and creative process; you will be able to create items no one has seen before, with your own individual touch. You can become the latest and hottest trendsetter, with items you were ready to get rid of, and become the envy of those around you.

If however there are items that cannot be spiced up or saved, you can always do something else with the material. Denim bags, purses, belts, hair bands and other accessories can all be made from old denims and pieces of other materials.

Sadly, though, like with everything else in life, some things can never be changed. Like a man who's done his time, sometimes it's better to let it go — maybe the next person will appreciate it more, and love it just the way it's been made.
