The singer-and-actress is famed for her individual style, and is rarely seen in anything which isn’t figure-hugging. She loves showing off her body, and believes sky-scraper heels are the only footwear which suit her look.

Mariah, 40, has worn high shoes for almost all her life, and is now so used to them she finds it hard to walk in flat footwear. "This height of heel is what I wear. Even my slippers. I can't even walk in flats," she said.

The star has previously revealed shoes without high heels give her blisters. She believes her feet are built to wear big heels, explaining she used to walk on her tiptoes when she was 12. "I guess I'm a heel girl. I can run in them. I could swim in them if necessary," she has said.

Despite taking her appearance very seriously, Mariah was happy to appear as a dowdy social worker in new movie Precious. She plays Miss Weiss, who tries to help an abused teenager. Mariah wears no make-up and ill-fitting clothes in the movie, and has previously admitted she was horrified when she was made to don a fake moustache.

Director Lee Daniels admits people were amazed he cast her as she is so far removed from the character. He made her readjust her posture, explaining her dedication to high heels caused problems.

"She walks — even in her home — on her f**king toenails! I said, 'This woman is not going to work if you're walking like Princess Tippy Toes,'" he told British newspaper The Observer.
