What bridal gown to wear?
Posted Fri, 12 Dec 2008

Elbeth Gillis's name has become synonymous with the exquisite bridal gowns she creates, establishing herself as a well respected and educated designer for the past decade. She tells us what brides should be wearing right now, as well as what the right fit is for your shape...

What sort of wedding dress suits different body shapes? For example if you're short and plumb what design should you look at, if you're tall and slim, if you have broad shoulder, small bust, big bust, big hips?>

Generally speaking, ball gown shapes are good for slim figures as they add curves and hide everything you want to hide for Pear shapes but are not recommended for petites.

An A-Line skirt is the most popular choice and looks good on a variety of body types. It also gives a clean look that works for most shapes.

Fitted sheath dresses are good for tall and thin or slim and petite and are not recommended for anybody who wants to hide anything.

Mermaid style dresses are good for hour glass figures and can be used to create height.

As far as necklines go, spaghetti straps are best suited for brides with small to medium breasts and aren't the best choice for people with broad shoulders.

Strapless gowns are suited to most figures and are a good option for broad or thick shoulders. V-necks are good for larger busts.

What are the trends for 2009 in wedding dresses and what can we expect to see?

Brides are going for clean, classic designs and more fitted dresses rather than the over-the-top designs from a few years ago. Whites and creams remain the most popular choices, and soft, flowing gowns are likely to be in fashion.

What styles are very fashionable for the current wedding season?

Lace dresses are very popular at the moment, especially delicate laces from France. Roushing detail is also fashionable at the moment.

Have you ever designed a dress which completely broke the mould — a strange colour or design?

We have done a bright red beaded ball gown as a wedding dress and the bride was delighted, although it was a brave move on her part.

What accessory do you think is essential for every bride to wear on the big day?

A lot depends on the gown, the person and the formality of the occasion. Earrings are always a subtle way to complement the perfect gown but the very best accessory is always a smile!
